Also referred to as structural massage, deep tissue techniques aim to target deeper layers of muscle and fascia in order to release tension deep within the muscle fibers. As the tense muscles are worked, fresh blood-flow and oxygen are introduced to that area which promotes muscular health and recovery. Deep tissue is especially helpful for those with chronic-pain patterns, postural issues, and athletes who need the benefit of firm, therapeutic pressure.
Thai massage was the basis of my training while attending school in Denver. Also known as "lazy man's yoga," the client will experience an unparalleled form of bodywork focused whole body-mind-spirit connection. It includes passive stretching, energy "sen" line work, acupressure, deep tissue techniqus, along with heat therapy using homemade herbal thai compresses. Most everyone will benefit from this type of massage. Benefits include promoting homeostasis (balance) in the body, decreased chronic and acute pain, increased flexibility and movement in muscles and joints, better circulation, improved sleep quality, reduced headaches, and improvement in athletic performance.
In Japanese, "Ashi" translates to foot, and "atsu" into pressure. This massage modality is a beautiful art with its roots in the East- mainly India, Japan, Thailand and China- beginning some 2,000 years ago. During an ashiatsu massage, the practitioner holds onto parallel overhead bars while applying firm and broad strokes with clean feet. This allows us to work with gravity in order to offer more even pressure across larger muscle groups. Since the feet have a bigger surface area than the hands, it provides a more comfortable approach to deep tissue compared to the pointy elbow and thumbs. This therapy is amazing for deep, structural realignment of soft tissues and works by releasing years of chronic pain patterns and tension within the body. To this day, the best massage I have ever received was an ashiatsu session by one of my favorite instructors in Colorado. I highly recommend this modality to anyone: The pressure can be as light as a feather or as deep as you want in order to break up chronic and acute muscle adhesion patterns. Giving a whole new, wonderful meaning to "being walked all over!"
Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese modality that uses glass or silicone cups that are placed on different parts of the body to release stagnation, fascia, and muscular tension in that area. I use both static and dynamic cupping techniques (will not leave bruises behind), which is great for increasing circulation, relieving tight fascial restrictions, and lymph-flow. Static cupping is the type that will leave the bruises; this technique is beneficial for trigger point relief, muscle strains and areas of chronic pain and tightness. I generally use some form of cupping with permission during a session due to the plethora of benefits it provides the receiver.
